Island Guizzo, Still Life with Flowers, 1965

This still life by Island Guizzo, dated 1965, depicts a purple vase filled with white flowers and animated by long green leaves and stems against a blue-green background.

Signed in red “Guizzo ’65”, the painting is executed in oil on canvas. The vigorous, textured brushwork and the strong chromatic contrasts give the composition an expressive vitality, while the luminous flowers emerge clearly from the deeper tones of the background.

The painting retains its gilt frame and comes from a French private collection.

Island Guizzo and Italian post-war figurative painting

Island Guizzo (Volpago del Montello, 1915 – Rome, 1987) developed his artistic career between Veneto and Rome, where he settled in 1952.

His work remained firmly connected to figurative painting and included portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Colour, light and a free, substantial handling of paint became distinctive elements of his mature language.

In this 1965 still life, the traditional subject of flowers is interpreted through an energetic pictorial surface rather than through precise naturalistic description. The result is a decorative yet intensely painted composition characteristic of Guizzo’s mature production.
