The landscape with a marina is a classic of old and modern painting.

As a subject in its own right, it probably reached its peak in the 19th century.

Great specialists of seascapes in Italy were the Neapolitan artists of the Posillipo School.

These included Salvatore Fergola (Naples 1796 – 1874), Giuseppe Carelli (Naples 1858 – Portici 1921) Giacinto (Naples 1806 – 1876) and Gaetano (Naples 1770 – 1840) Gigante and finally Attilio Pratella (Lugo 1856 – Naples 1949).
