Island Guizzo. The painter of the city of Treviso
Island Guizzo (Volpago del Montello, 1915 – Rome, 1987) was an Italian painter of Venetian origin, described by Giovanni Comisso as “the painter of the city of Treviso” because of his deep connection with the landscapes and atmospheres of the Veneto region.
Born into a modest family, he completed his regular studies in his native land and began his artistic training in nearby Treviso and Venice, studying the works of the Renaissance masters.
Between 1947 and 1950, he traveled extensively in Europe, Asia Minor and Africa, visiting museums, galleries and picture galleries to assimilate international influences.
In 1952 he moved to Rome, where he lived most of his life and where he collaborated with figures such as Giorgio de Chirico, who described him as having a “strong temperament.”
A self-taught painter, Guizzo began to devote himself intensely to painting around the early 1960s, producing works for about two decades and participating in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
His creations, often portraits, landscapes and still lifes, are characterized by a vibrant use of color and light, with textural brushstrokes that evoke deep emotions.
He died in Rome in 1987, leaving a legacy preserved mainly in private collections, but also in public institutions.
Island Guizzo in museums
Works by Island Guizzo can be found in public institutions. In particular, some of his creations appear in the collection of the Museum of Rome, testifying to his recognition in the Capitoline art scene. However, most of the works remain in private collections in Italy, Canada and the US.
Pictorial current of Island Guizzo
Island Guizzo fits into modern figurative painting after World War II, with expressionist influences. His textured and colorful style goes beyond traditional realism, emphasizing light and emotion to touch the “soul” of the visible, in line with Italian post-impressionist and informal trends of the 1960s.
