Angiolo Tommasi
Angiolo Tommasi was born on August 27, 1858, in Livorno, into a wealthy family passionate about art.
Early Life
His training began in his hometown, but it was the encounter with Silvestro Lega, a prominent figure in the Macchiaioli movement—characterized by patches of color without defined outlines—that marked a decisive turning point in his artistic path.
Formation and influences
In 1881, the family moved to Bellariva, near Florence, where Silvestro Lega guided the training of Angiolo and his younger brother Lodovico, encouraging them to paint en plein air. Angiolo also enrolled in the local Academy of Fine Arts.
During this period, Lega’s influence is evident: Tommasi depicted subjects from life with a rapid and fluid brushstroke, as in Paesaggio (Landscape circa 1884).

Exhibitions and artistic themes
In 1886, he exhibited at the First Fine Arts Exhibition in Livorno, and in 1889 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where he won a bronze medal.
His preferred themes became the countryside, its workers, and the humble people in general, with attention to social implications, as in The Emigrants (1896).
His works stand out for the study of light, atmospheric effects, and minute touches of color that capture details. He created numerous portraits, both of popular figures like Old clothes (1895), and of illustrious personalities, such as the Portrait of Pietro Mascagni (1899), exhibited in the museum.

Later Years
In 1899, he departed for Argentina, returning in 1903 to settle in Torre del Lago (Lucca), where he had already stayed. Here, he came into contact with the circle of artists revolving around Giacomo Puccini, evolving his style toward an increasingly fragmented brushstroke, composed of quick juxtaposed strokes, inaugurating a new phase of great creative vitality.
