Girolamo Gianni was born in Naples in 1837, into a modest family, and from a young age manifested a talent for painting, training at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown.
Influenced by the Posillipo School, he devoted himself mainly to the genre of urban landscapes and seascapes, often inserting human figures to enliven the scenes and lend a touch of social realism.
His favorite subjects were Neapolitan alleys teeming with life, Partenopean gardens and Mediterranean coastlines, rendered with a luminous and detailed technique that captured the poetry of Italian light.
In the 1870s, he traveled to southern Italy and settled temporarily in Capri and Malta, where he drew inspiration for exotic views and breathtaking sunsets.
He died in Malta in 1895, leaving a body of work that reflects 19th-century Romanticism and a love of nature.
His output, often on paper or canvas, is celebrated for its balance of realistic detail and evocative atmosphere, making him a leading exponent of Neapolitan vedutismo.
