Valuable original drawing on paper by painter Renato Guttuso (1911-1987), probably made in the 1970s, a period when the artist executed numerous drawings on paper inspired by the female figure and classical sculpture, with an expressionist approach.
Mixed media ink and tempera.  Dimensions of the work mm 460 x 300 (inch 18,11 x 11,81). The work is enriched by an Empire-style frame in gilded wood with gold leaf.
The black stroke is firm and vigorous, typical of Guttuso’s drawings, while the coloring is fluid, expressive, not realistic. Signature at lower right.

Description

This work by Renato Guttuso represents a modern reinterpretation of the Venus de Milo, one of the most famous examples of classical Greek sculpture.
Renato Guttuso (1911-1987) was a politically committed Italian painter of realist and expressionist orientation. Although known for his paintings of social denunciation and still lifes, Guttuso repeatedly explored the human body and references to classical art, as in this work.
