Renato Guttuso

Renato Guttuso was one of the most important Italian painters of the 20th century, known for his social and political engagement through art.

Born Dec. 26, 1911, in Bagheria, Sicily, and died Jan. 18, 1987, in Rome, Guttuso developed a style that blended social realism, expressionism, and Cubist influences, becoming a symbol of anti-fascism and the working-class struggle.

The beginnings

Guttuso was born into a modest family: his father Gioacchino was a land surveyor and amateur watercolorist, while his mother Giuseppina d’Amico encouraged him in the arts. From an early age he showed talent for painting, exhibiting his first work when he was only 13.

Corrente movement

He studied in Palermo and then Rome, where he came into contact with the Italian artistic avant-garde, influenced by artists such as Pablo Picasso and the Corrente movement, which promoted an art committed against fascism.

Artistic career and Political engagement

In the 1930s and 1940s, Guttuso made a name for himself with works denouncing social injustices, such as “Fuga dall’Etna” (1938), inspired by volcanic eruptions and Sicilian migrations.

A member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), he was elected senator in 1976. His style evolved toward expressive realism, with themes such as peasant labor, the Resistance and Sicilian daily life. Iconic works include “La Vucciria” (1974), a vivid portrait of the Palermo market, and “Boogie Woogie” (1953), reflecting postwar American influences.

In 1942 he wins the 4th edition of the Bergamo Prize with his painting La Crocifissione (The Crucifixion) a piece that caused controversy for its strong expressionism perceived as heretical in comparison with the traditional iconography of the subject.

The end of the 1960s, with a series of autobiographical paintings and female portraits, marks thebeginning of an intimist production, albeit still politically committed.

In 1972, he paints the large canvas entitled I funerali di Togliatti (Togliatti’s funeral) and in 1974, Vucciria, one of his most famous paintings, characterised by a strong and descriptive realism, depicting the same-name marketplace in the city of Palermo (Sicily).
