Leonor Fini, an Argentine surrealist painter of Italian origins (1907-1996), was an admirer of de Sade and saw in the assignment the opportunity to interpret the text from a female perspective, emphasizing the dominance and desire of the protagonist Juliette – in stark contrast to the passive victim Justine from the previous novel.
The illustrations do not depict specific scenes from the book, but capture the atmosphere of eroticism, cruelty, and eighteenth-century grace.
