His artistic development was influenced by his knowledge of the work of Filippo Palizzi and Domenico Morelli. Later, his encounter with the painting of Mariano Fortuny also played an important role.
In Girl with Basket, the narrative element remains deliberately understated. Instead, attention is focused on the light entering the narrow lane, the subtle variations in the walls and the natural presence of the female figure. As a result, an ordinary episode becomes a refined pictorial study of light, colour and atmosphere.
This oil painting by Pio Joris is therefore representative of his interest in scenes of popular life. Its intimate format also encourages close observation of the numerous details within the composition.
Traces of a signature and date are visible at the lower right. On the reverse is an old inscription reading “Autentico Pio Joris”. The work also retains its period giltwood frame.
