Of the first sculpture, a group of highly vigorous original artistry, all that remains is Adam’s Mask
This phrase is from a very rare 1929 pamphlet L’Abruzzo nel mio cuore [“Abruzzo in my hear”], an invaluable account of the history of this partially lost masterpiece. Our beautiful head is the only surviving piece of the wonderful sculpture group Adam’s Sleep by Elisabetta Mayo.
Let’s again hear the words of author Beatrice Testa for the description:
A strange, terrifying mask, where the facial features of the first man have been brutalized by rebellion and
sin, borders on the horror of the basest beastliness. Between his forehead bumps, protruding cheekbones,
bags under his eyes swollen with distrubed sleep, and his flabby and ignoble mouth, we can glimpse the
flicker of a sly, mocking wickedness.
This unsparing yet realistic description does not prevent us from appreciating the undeniable sculptural power of the work and its inimitable fascination.
