sThis Assen Peikov drawing depicts Khan Asparuh as a helmeted warrior. The face turns to the right and tilts slightly upward. The focused gaze, mustache, and beard give the figure a stern expression, while the helmet creates a strong outline above the brow.
Peikov combines firm contours with softly blended charcoal. Shadows shape the cheekbone, cheek, and neck, while lighter areas bring the face forward from the background. This emphasis on volume suggests a sculptor’s approach: the head has a substantial presence while retaining the immediacy of drawing on paper.
The figure evokes Asparuh, the ruler associated with the founding of the Bulgarian state recognized by Byzantium in 681. This image thus offers a historical interpretation of the subject.
The signature and the inscription “Roma 72,” referring to 1972, appear at the lower right. Initials are visible on the left. The full view shows the sheet within a dark mat and a frame with a gold-colored finish.
Assen Peikov (1908–1973) was a Bulgarian sculptor active in Rome and the creator of the Leonardo da Vinci monument at Fiumicino Airport. Here, the modeling of the face invites a closer look at the relationship between drawing and sculptural form.
