A documented pastel by Michel Carà Ovcinnicoff

This mythological scene by Michel Carà Ovcinnicoff is particularly interesting for the historical documentation accompanying it.

A brochure survives from the artist’s solo exhibition held at the Galleria d’Arte in Via Cavour 14, Florence, from 17 to 28 May 1947. The exhibition catalogue lists at number 6 a work entitled La Fuga (“The Escape”), which may possibly correspond to the present composition. The identification, however, should be regarded as probable rather than definitive.

The artist’s presence within the Italian art scene of the post-war period is also documented by contemporary art criticism and specialised publications.

Autograph dedication

The reverse bears an autograph dedication by Michel Carà Ovcinnicoff, dated Rome, 12 May 1955, adding further documentary interest to the history of the work.
