Description

Bacchus and Ariadne masterpiece painting

Ariadne fell in love with Theseus when he came to Crete to kill the Minotaur in the labyrinth. Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of yarn (the proverbial Ariadne’s thread) to mark the path traveled in the labyrinth and easily find his way out of it. An ungrateful Theseus made it out of the labyrinth, took Ariadne, and fled with the other Athenians to Athens. During the journey, he abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos.

Ariadne awoke to see Theseus’ ship leaving. But the pain of her abandonment was short-lived as Bacchus soon arrived, found her in a state of despair, and wanted to marry her.
