Description

The use of the architectural past is highly reminiscent of Piranesi’s fantastic architecture; like Piranesi, Fornasetti cultivates a philological rigour of the representation of vestiges of the past which, through the precision with which it is carried out, tranforms into its opposite. Like Piranesi’s ruins. Fornasetti’s reconstruction do not so much evoke the past, as seem to be a “memory of the future” of a world that has never been and may never be.The “pure” decoration, as defined by Gio Ponti, is at the service of what is perhaps most characteristic in Fornasetti’s objects, and ensures that they do not relate only to a fad or a historical period; that is their poetic chatacter.
