Philips Wouwerman painting depicting cavalry taking refreshment at a Sutler’s tent.
Philips Wouwerman was one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the Dutch Golden Age. He was an exponent of the Dutch Baroque influenced, like much of northern European production, by Pieter van Laer’s images of peasants, soldiers and brigands.
He is best known for his skill in depicting horses of all breeds in motion. The masterpieces from his best period (c. 1650-60) are of unquestionably high quality and magnificently combine landscapes with a typically Dutch flavour with imaginary scenery.
Wouwerman’s paintings are characterised by soft colours, a cool atmosphere and a wealth of witty and anecdotal details.
