Jacob de Backer: an Antwerp Mannerist

Jacob de Backer was active in Antwerp during the second half of the sixteenth century. His paintings are associated with the city’s late Mannerist culture, in which expressive figures and ambitious religious and mythological subjects held a prominent place.

Few details of his life can be established with certainty. The painter and writer Karel van Mander included an account of de Backer in his Schilder-boeck, published in 1604, but that early testimony should be read as a historical source rather than as a fully verified biography. Even his birth and death dates are given differently across modern catalogues. For this reason, “active in Antwerp in the late sixteenth century” is more precise than stating exact years without qualification.

Paintings and attribution

De Backer’s name is linked to compositions on biblical, allegorical and mythological themes. His work reflects the artistic exchanges between Antwerp and Italy that helped shape Netherlandish Mannerism.

Attribution is an essential part of his story. Several compositions survive in multiple versions, and scholars continue to examine which works may be by de Backer himself and which belong to his studio or to artists working in a related style. A catalogue description should therefore preserve distinctions such as “attributed to,” “studio of” and “follower of”: they do not mean the same thing.

A work formerly in our gallery

Egidi MadeinItaly previously presented Danaë and the Golden Rain, an early seventeenth-century painting attributed to a Venetian follower of Jacob de Backer. The work is no longer available; its catalogue entry remains online as a record of the painting.
