Demetrio Tabacco was born in Turin on 7 May 1886. A painter and illustrator, he began his artistic training in his native city, where he briefly attended the studio of Tommaso Ruffo. His work developed through landscape, figure painting and scenes of everyday life, with particular attention to perspective and atmosphere.

Early career and exhibitions

Tabacco made his debut in Biella in 1921. He later exhibited in Turin, Vercelli and Novara, gradually establishing himself within the Piedmontese artistic scene.

His work remained firmly figurative and closely connected with direct observation. Although he painted landscapes, he showed a particular interest in the human figure and in animated scenes.

The years in Tripoli

Between 1916 and 1918, Tabacco lived in Tripoli, an experience that played an important role in his artistic development.

During these years he painted scenes of local life and customs, focusing on figures, architecture and North African subjects. Works recorded in contemporary sources include Arab Knights, Murzuq Castle, Arabian Fantasy, Water Carriers, Arab Well, Arab Market, Travelling Musicians, The Caravan, Prayer in the Desert and Interior of a Mosque.

His skill in perspective was particularly noted in Interior of a Mosque.

Landscape and figure painting

After returning to Italy, Tabacco continued to work with both landscape and the human figure.

The Piedmontese landscape became an important part of his production. His paintings reveal an interest in light, atmospheric effects and spatial construction, while retaining a narrative dimension. Figure painting nevertheless remained one of his principal interests throughout his career.
