Stephen W. Kuzma Biography
Stephen W. Kuzma was born in Toledo, Ohio, on May 14, 1933, and died on January 6, 2023. An American painter and illustrator, he developed a figurative practice centred on landscape, cityscapes and portraiture. In the context of post-war American art, Kuzma maintained an independent position, grounded in direct observation, the study of light and the atmospheric character of places.
Artistic training in Chicago and New York
Stephen W. Kuzma trained at several important American art institutions. He studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago from 1951 to 1953, continued at the Art Students League of New York from 1954 to 1955, and later attended the National Academy of Design from 1958 to 1959.
His arrival in New York during the 1950s was central to his artistic development. In a city marked by rapidly changing artistic languages, Kuzma pursued a figurative path focused on the relationship between figures, architecture, urban space and light.
Stephen Kuzma and the Soho Art Scene
Kuzma was closely connected with the New York art scene and with Soho during a period of major transformation. Before becoming an international centre for contemporary art, the neighbourhood was still characterised by industrial buildings, artists’ studios and working streets.
In Kuzma’s views of Manhattan, the city is not treated as a purely architectural subject. Buildings, streets and figures become part of a lived environment, shaped by atmosphere and human presence.
Landscapes, views, and places of memory
Landscape occupies an important place in Kuzma’s work. He painted views inspired by places such as Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy, developing compositions in which nature, light and atmosphere assume a central role.
His paintings remain rooted in direct observation, while avoiding a merely descriptive approach. The landscape is translated into a measured and personal vision, in which the perception of place is combined with memory and pictorial interpretation.
The View of Rome and its relationship to Italian tradition
In View of Rome from the Pincio, dated 1990, Kuzma depicts the city from an elevated viewpoint, with Mediterranean vegetation, architecture and the dome of St. Peter’s emerging in the distance.
The work is not conceived as a strict topographical record. Instead, the Roman landscape is transformed through light, distance and atmosphere, creating an image that can be read in relation to the long tradition of views of Rome while remaining firmly within twentieth-century figurative painting.
