Giovanni Fattori: A Revolution in Painting The Exhibition Path at Villa Mimbelli

The Giovanni Fattori exhibition unfolds across 24 rooms on three floors of Villa Mimbelli. Curated by Vincenzo Farinella and designed by architect Luigi Cupellini, the exhibition traces the artistic evolution of Giovanni Fattori, master of the Macchiaioli movement, seamlessly integrating artworks with the villa’s original furnishings and historic decorations.

From Academic Roots to the Macchiaioli Breakthrough

On the ground floor, visitors encounter Fattori’s early works, still influenced by Florentine academic painters such as Giuseppe Bezzuoli and Enrico Pollastrini. These paintings already reveal a growing desire to move beyond academic conventions toward a more direct, realistic, and modern visual language.

The Castiglioncello School and Tuscan Light

The first floor celebrates the golden age of the Macchiaioli. Together with Nino Costa, Fattori founded the Castiglioncello School, devoted to plein-air landscape painting.
Here, seascapes and Tuscan views take center stage, including Beach at Livorno and The Lady Martelli at Castiglioncello(1867), masterpieces renowned for their balance, luminosity, and atmospheric clarity.

Risorgimento Realism and Artistic Maturity

The second floor focuses on historical and social themes. In works such as The Assault at Madonna della Scoperta(1862) and Cavalry Charge at Montebello (1862), Fattori depicts the human cost of war, abandoning patriotic rhetoric in favor of a sober, compassionate realism.

The final section explores the landscapes of the Maremma, where Fattori’s painting reaches full expressive maturity through rigorous composition, natural light, and deep empathy for rural life.

A Cultural Regeneration Project

The Giovanni Fattori exhibition also represents a broader cultural revitalization project. Villa Mimbelli is envisioned as a dynamic museum hub, hosting workshops, lectures, and initiatives dedicated to 19th-century Italian art.

A project that brings together tradition, scholarly research, and innovation, enhancing Tuscany’s artistic heritage and reaffirming Fattori’s role as an artist who illuminated the human condition.
