A young Dario Sabatello opened the galleria Sabatello on Via del Babuino 61 in 1932 with a Marino Marini exhibition and a lecture by Massimo Bontempelli.
An Antonio Donghi exhibition followed in December 1932.
The young Pericle Fazzini and Alberto Ziveri had their first solo show there, exhibiting at the same time as Giuseppe Grassi. Alberto Savinio showed there in February 1934, as did Mario Tozzi in March of that year.
Over the gallery’s three-year existence, it featured the works of Sabatello’s friends, never following any particular program.
Yet the exhibits had a remarkable influence on the Roman art scene.
In his review of Savinio’s show Retour de Paris, Libero de Libero called it a healthy upheaval amid the quagmire that had been inundating the Roman art world for some time (L’Italia Letteraria, Rome, February 11, 1934).
It was practically the only private Roman gallery to show contemporary art.
The guest book preserved by the gallerist’s family includes the signatures of Sandro Volta, Vincenzo Cardarelli, Sibilla Aleramo, Enrico Falqui, Margherita Sarfatti, a young Palma Bucarelli, and celebrities like Queen Margherita, Giuseppe Bottai, and Attilio Teruzzi.
