Orazio Amato
Orazio Amato was born in Anticoli Corrado.
His father, a pharmacist, had an inn in the village where he entertained artists who stayed there.
Young Orazio would treasure the advice and teachings of the artists who were guests at his father’s inn.
His first works date from 1896.
Orazio Amato moved to Rome
He moved to Rome and attended the Accademia del circolo artistico in Via Margutta.
In May 1915 he was drafted into the war, but despite his military obligations he did not give up painting.
Art school in the Orti Sallustiani
Between 1921 and 1924, together with the painter Felice Carena and the sculptor Attilio Selva, he organized an art school in the Orti Sallustiani; among the students were Giuseppe Capogrossi, Emanuele Cavalli and Fausto Pirandello.
In 1924 he inaugurated his first solo exhibition at the Stuart Hall in Via Veneto.
He was appointed secretary of the Via Margutta Art Association, a position he held until 1933.
In 1931 he was on the organizing committee of the 1st Quadriennale d’Arte Nazionale and in the same year he participated in the exhibition of Contemporary Italian painting in Baltimore, United States.
In 1934 he was elected deputy of the Artists’ Guild and worked for the adoption of the 2% law in favor of art in public buildings.
Orazio Amato in 1937, he was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Art et Techniques in Paris.
He was named an Academician of Saint Luke’s.
In 1943 he was appointed to a permanent position at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, but in 1945 he was stripped of all official positions due to the purges that followed the fall of Fascism.
He continued to work until 1962, the year of his death.
