Onorato Carlandi
Onorato Carlandi was born in Rome on May 15, 1848, and died in Rome in 1939.
He studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti under Coghetti, Capalti, and De Santis.
After news of the war broke in 1866 he enlisted with Garibaldi’s volunteers in the Trentino campaign. Driven by memories and enthusiasm for the war years, he painted La barca dei Cairoli (The Cairoli Brothers’ Boat, 1871) at Domenico Morelli’s school in Naples and I prigionieri di Mentana (The Prisoners of Mentana, 1872) in Rome.
His historical paintings met with unexpected success when presented at the Casina del Pincio in Rome in 1871.
Onorato Carlandi moved to London
In 1880 he moved to London where he admired the works of Constable and Turner and the watercolors of Peter De Wint.
This exposure sparked a series of paintings from life in the English countryside and classic views of the Thames.
In 1909, he wrote an article about his time in England in the magazine The Studio accompanied by several photographs:
“Only after my stay in London, home of the modern landscape, did my eyes open to the light. Once there I went from Turner to Constable and on to David and Cox. But one stayed on my mind above all: Peter de Wint.”
Campagna Romana Group
With Nino Costa he founded and advocated for the group in arte Libertas, which later led to the formation of the ‘XXV della Campagna Romana’ group.
His many paintings, some in oil but most in watercolor, depicted various aspects of the Roman countryside, including the Tiber from its source to its mouth and the olive trees on the hills of Tivoli. Critics and the public appreciated his work. Il tempo e diresse una frequentata scuola di pittura
Exhibitions
He showed at the Royal Academy in London between 1882 and 1889. He also exhibited in Paris, Berlin, and Dusseldorf.
After returning to Rome, he successfully exhibited his watercolors every year, including nine pieces in a dedicated room at the 58th Venice Biennale.
On the first anniversary of his death, Onorato Carlandi’s widow donated over 200 of his paintings to the Museo di Roma.
