Mino Maccari
Mino Maccari (Siena, Nov. 24, 1898 – Rome, June 16, 1989) was a versatile Italian artist, painter, engraver, journalist and writer.
Having enlisted as a volunteer in World War I as an artillery officer, on his return he devoted himself to art, founding in 1924 the magazine “Il Selvaggio,” organ of the Strapaese movement, which promoted a return to rural and traditional Italian values with a satirical and anti-modernist approach.
During these years he tried his hand at painting and engraving for the first time.
Influenced by expressionism, his works are known for grotesque caricatures, illustrations critical of society and power, often with political and social themes.
Maccari then worked for several other magazines as a journalist and author, before and during World War II, with a fascist orientation. By 1922 he had already participated in Mussolini’s March on Rome. Maccari was also a set and costume designer.
He participated in the art section of the 1948 Olympics and contributed to numerous publications, leaving a significant legacy in 20th-century Italian art.
In 1962 he was appointed president of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome.
