Jean Georges Pasquet: French landscape painter of the Dordogne

Jean Georges Pasquet (1851–1936) was a French landscape painter from Périgueux, celebrated for his views of the Dordogne region and the French Atlantic coast, especially Biarritz. His realist, en plein air style and vibrant treatment of light make him a valued artist for collectors of 19th-century French painting.

Origins and early life in Dordogne

Born in 1851 in Périgueux, Pasquet came from a noble family descended from the Pasquet de la Héronière lineage of Savignac-Lédrier. Growing up in the Périgord countryside shaped his lifelong inspiration for Dordogne landscapes.

Training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris

Academic realism and luminous technique

As a young man, Pasquet studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Gustave Boulanger, Jules Lefèvre, and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. This academic background provided a strong structural foundation, enriched by the luminous influences that defined his French landscape style.

Landscape Works: from Biarritz to the Dordogne

Master of périgourdin light

Pasquet specialized in painting the Atlantic coastline—notably Biarritz and Saint-Georges-de-Didonne—and the sweeping views of the Dordogne.
His vivid color palette, precise brushwork, and light-filled plein-air technique bring depth to his natural and everyday scenes.
He is often associated with the artistic movement known as the École de Périgueux.

Artistic Legacy: exhibitions, cuctions, and museum collections

Pasquet exhibited at the Paris Salon, earning recognition for his sensitivity to light and color.
He died in 1936 in Paris, leaving around 20 documented works in auction records, with prices ranging from 278 to 845 USD.
Today, some of his paintings are held at the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie du Périgord, confirming his strong link to his native region.
