Filiberto Petiti

Petiti and Italian landscape painting

Filiberto Petiti (Turin, 1845 – Rome, 1924) was an Italian landscape painter whose career developed between Piedmont, Florence, and Rome. His paintings combine careful drawing with a restrained palette and a poetic feeling for nature. Fields, woodland, and changing skies become places where observation meets personal expression.

From Piedmont to Florence

Petiti learned drawing and watercolor from Felice Cerruti Beauduc. He also looked to the landscapes of Angelo Beccaria and Carlo Piacenza, whose work shaped his early interests.

After moving to Florence in 1867, he met Telemaco Signorini and came into contact with the Macchiaioli. These encounters encouraged a closer engagement with nature. However, he retained an independent approach rooted in the landscape tradition of Piedmont.

Rome and the XXV della Campagna Romana

Petiti settled in Rome in 1874. There he met Carlo Pittara, a leading figure in the Rivara School, and later joined the city’s watercolorists’ association. In 1881, he left his administrative employment to devote himself entirely to art.

Around 1907, he joined the XXV della Campagna Romana, a group of painters devoted to the countryside surrounding Rome. For Petiti, working from nature remained a starting point for personal interpretation. The atmosphere of a place mattered as much as its recognizable features.

Exhibitions and recognition

Petiti exhibited in Italy and abroad. His painting Maccarese earned a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900, while Notturno received a silver medal in Saint Louis in 1904. He also participated in the Venice Biennale in 1901 and 1903.

In 1915, the official catalog of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco listed his painting Toward Evening.

Alongside painting, Petiti practiced etching. He exhibited Solitudine and Dopo la tempesta in Rome in 1912 and was a member of the Accademia di San Luca.
