Ercole Gigante

Ercole Gigante was trained and influenced by his brother Giacinto, a frequent visitor to Anton Pitloo’s studio in Via Chiaia, called the Posillipo School because of the production of landscapes that made the Bay of Naples world famous.

Ercole Gigante’s chromatic theme

The artist developed a chromatic theme popularized by Nordic painters such as Johan Christian Dahl: the juxtaposition of the cold tones of the moon and the warm tones of fire, which became a great classic of Neoclassical and Romantic melancholy painting.

The Posillipo School

Giacinto Gigante and his younger brother Ercole are among the most representative painters of the  School,of Posillipo which originated in Anton Pitloo’s studio.

Here Giacinto met many artists who came to Naples attracted by Pompeii and intrigued by the supernatural spectacle of Vesuvius, which has been erupting almost continuously since the late 18th century.

The iconic pine tree of Naples

The panorama punctuated by the maritime pine and with a sky at the end or beginning of the day became the model for a composition that, through lithographs and postcards, conquered the world’s imagination.
