Alberto Issel

Alberto Issel (Genoa, 1848 – 1926) was an Italian painter, designer, and entrepreneur.

He trained in Florence during his youth, studying from life with Karl Markò and becoming familiar with Fattori’s work, sharing military subjects and a taste for small horizontal canvases, as well as Rome.

He soon joined the Genoese Scuola dei Grigi with Avendaño, D’Andrade, Musso, and was led by Tammar Luxoro.

Around 1870, in Rome, he closely encountered Mariano Fortuny’s glazed painting.

Due to an eye illness, he had to abandon painting and focus on applied arts.

In 1880, he opened a well-known shop on Via Roma in Genoa, with the help of his son Arturo and Aristide Olgiati for design.

Alongside producing style furniture, Issel created a series of Art Nouveau-inspired pieces and successfully exhibited in Paris in 1900 and in Turin in 1902.

An interesting work is the elegant Liberty-style lounge of the Wolfsoniana, showcasing the artist’s creative versatility: a walnut lounge with refined floral fabrics for the upholstery and colorful lacquers for the carved wooden vegetative motifs.
