Born in Vienna, Moritz Ludwig von Schwind was friends with Franz Schubert and Franz Grillparzer in his youth and remained closely associated with music throughout his life.

He came to Munich in 1828 to study with Peter Cornelius.

Moritz Ludwig von Schwind (1804-1871) received several commissions from the Bavarian royal family to paint rooms in the Munich Residence and Hohenschwangau Palace.

Schwind made a name for himself with the fresco cycles in the Karlsruhe Kunsthalle and the Wartburg.

In addition to his monumental history paintings, Schwind created numerous illustrations for the “Münchner Bilderbogen” and the “Fliegende Blätter,” as well as series of illustrations for legends and fairy tales, which earned him great popularity.

Schwind remained true to the ideals of late-Romantic painting at a time when a more realistic and naturalistic style of painting had long been established.

His smooth paintings, characterized by muted colors, are based entirely on drawing, and his motifs are drawn from fairy tales and folk legends. Schwind often succeeded in transforming his subjects from the fantastic and disturbing to the popular and familiar.
