Painter and draftsman with a refined technique. He was much admired for his compositional skills and his rapid brushstroke. Having trained both as a view painter and as a set designer, he became one of the greatest chroniclers of the Risorgimento era.

In his youth, Carlo Bossoli trained with a master set designer from whom he took lessons in painting and set design.

We can see this training in his landscapes reminiscent of the design backdrops for theater sets.
