Sante Nucci

Sante Nucci (Bologna 1821-1896)attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where he was a student of G. Stagni and Clemente Alberi.

In neo-17th-century academic forms, he painted many works en plein air in his city: In the 1940s, he was involved in decorating the church of the Capuchins, and in 1851, he painted the Saints Peter and Paul in the church of Santa Maria della Carità.

In 1856, he and Andrea Besteghi decorated the atrium of the new theatre in Rimini.

The old Argenta theatre was decorated with his frescoes, and there were scenes by Romolo Liverani from Faenza depicting Giovanni Battista Aleotti in the act of presenting the Duke of Parma with his design for the theatre to be built in Parma.

Alongside his work as a decorator, he also created altarpieces and secular works. Some were presented at the Bolognese exhibitions (1852, Socrate in atto di bere la cicuta; 1867 [Socrates in the Act of Drinking Hemlock]; 1867, L’amor conjugale [Conjugal Love], private collection).

He was also a portraitist (Portrait of Giuseppe Mazzini, 1874, Bologna, Museo Civico del Risorgimento), and he also painted themes of contemporary life.
