Francesco Fedeli know as Il Maggiotto

Francesco Fedeli, known as Il Maggiotto (Venice, 1738 – 1805), Italian painter and physicist.

Francesco was the son of the Venetian painter Domenico Fedeli from whom he inherited the nickname Maggiotto, which became their last name. He was considered one of the greatest students of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

Trained in his father’s workshop, he was an artist straddling two eras. He was an eclectic painter whose work ran the gamut from historical to devotional and genre painting.

Andrea Tessier provides a comprehensive list of works that the artist painted both for noble Venetian patrons and foreign ones, including Russians, French and English buyers of his works, proving the appeal of his painting.

At the age of 23, Francesco was admitted to the College of Painters of Venice, and he was named a “painting master” in 1771 by the Venetian Academy. He alternated holding the two-year roles of curator, councilor, mayor, prior, and eventually president.

Many prominent artists trained at his academy, such as the engraver 𝗚. 𝗦. 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘇𝘇𝗶 (enrolled in 1772), the sculptor 𝗟. 𝗭𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗵𝗶 and major Venetian painters of neoclassicism such as 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻, 𝗕𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗮, 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼, 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝘆𝗲𝘇, Schiavoni, Querena, and Politi.

Francesco worked successfully in almost all painting genres. He did not shy from painting copies of famous artists of his day, miniatures on ivory, oil painting on copper and frescoes without neglecting drawing as its own art and the preparatory drawing for etchings. These compositions were translated into engravings by contemporary artists like 𝗚. 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼, 𝗧. 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗼, and 𝗣. 𝗗𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲.
