Gaetano Martinez sculptor from Lecce
Gaetano Martinez (originally Martines), born Nov. 14, 1892, in Galatina (Lecce) to Vito and Rosa Ripa, was a self-taught Italian sculptor, an emblem of classical realism in the southern twentieth century.
Raised in a family of stonemasons, he attended the Galatina School of Arts and Crafts for only two years, preferring practical learning as a woodcarver. In 1911 he moved to Rome, where he absorbed the influence of the Roman School and the Novecento movement, combining Apulian tradition with a monumental expressiveness inspired by Arturo Martini and Marino Marini.

His career took off in the 1920s-30s with works such as “Fanciulla” and “Il vinto,” characterized by sensual and contemplative female figures, often in bronze or marble, celebrating matter and the human form with classical rigor. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale (1928-1942, with a solo room in ’42), the Rome Quadrennial (1931 and 1935) and the Rome Interprovincial Exhibition (1938, with “Wanda”). Prominent among public achievements is the bust of Filippo Turati in the Chamber of Deputies.
Martinez died Oct. 2, 1951, in Rome, leaving a legacy of about 200 works, rediscovered today for its bridge between Salento tradition and Italian modernity. In 2022, Galatina dedicated a bronze bust to him in Piazza Alighieri for the 130th anniversary of his birth.
The author of an intimate and vigorous art, Martinez remains a treasure for sculpture collectors in southern Italy.
