Enrico Pollastrini
(Livorno, 1817 – Florence, 1876)
He was born to a humble family in Livorno and began his training with Vincenzo de Bonis, Giuseppe Bezzuoli, and Pietro Benvenuti at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, where he was appointed professor in 1845.
Over time, he was assigned to the chair of drawing, the chair of painting, and finally, director.

After a few biblical works, he produced his first history painting, “The Death of Duke Alessandro de’ Medici”, in 1840.
History painting remained a constant feature of his activity until a few years after his death, as a series of sketches from 1873 show.

However, he also devoted himself to other subjects, such as genre scenes, religious scenes, and contemporary events.

His painting is typically academic, in the vein of the sixteenth-century tradition, with technical skill, fine preparatory drawing, glazed colors, accurate chiaroscuro, and precise modeling.

His works are in the churches of Saints Peter and Paul in Livorno: “The Immaculate Conception“, 1857, and “Saint Lawrence distributing the gifts of the Church to the poor in the catacomb“, 1862.
He died in Florence in 1876.
