A Lenci ceramic rabbit from Turin

This Lenci ceramic rabbit holds a flower between its paws. It is a charming example of Lenci ceramics, made in polychrome glazed earthenware. The gesture gives the small figure a gentle sense of movement and turns a familiar animal into an engaging decorative subject.

The work belongs to the animal subjects produced by the Lenci factory in Turin. Its compact size makes it easy to appreciate on a shelf, in a display cabinet, or alongside other Italian ceramics. The product details date the figure to 1950 and record a height of 18 cm.

Lenci ceramics and the art of the small figure

Elena König and Enrico Scavini founded Lenci in Turin in 1919. First known for its felt dolls, the factory began producing artistic ceramics in 1928. Its repertoire grew to include figures, animals, and imaginative subjects developed through the work of numerous artists and skilled makers.

This rabbit shows how a modest subject can have a distinct presence. The flower draws attention to the front of the figure, while its rounded form gives the ceramic an inviting character. It can be enjoyed as a single decorative piece or placed in conversation with other works of twentieth-century Italian craftsmanship.

For collectors interested in Lenci ceramics, the figure offers a subject with immediate appeal: an animal, a flower, and the color of glazed earthenware brought together in a small sculptural object. The details of the base and the condition of the glaze can be discussed with the gallery when enquiring about the work. As an Italian ceramic figurine from the twentieth century, the rabbit can be enjoyed on its own or alongside other animal subjects.

For historical context, see the Museo Torino entry on the Lenci factory. This source concerns the factory’s history, not the cataloguing of this particular rabbit.

What does Lenci mean?

Lenci is an acronym for the Latin motto “Ludus Est Nobis Constanter Industria” (Play is our constant work).
