Its painters helped renew 19th-century Ligurian painting through direct observation of nature and work in the open air. Their landscapes invite us to notice how light softens a hillside, touches the water, or brings distant forms together.

The Scuola dei Grigi and its aims

The Scuola dei Grigi was a circle of artists brought together by shared interests rather than a formal academy. Working in Liguria during the second half of the nineteenth century, they sought a closer relationship with the places they painted. Atmosphere and the experience of looking became central to their approach.

These painters explored color through outdoor painting, with an attention to everyday reality related to Italian Verismo. Their work also had affinities with the Macchiaioli and the painters of the Rivara School.

Origins in Genoa

The group took shape in the Genoese artistic milieu around the early 1860s. Tammar Luxoro encouraged younger painters to study landscape from life, while Ernesto Rayper became one of its leading figures. The artists associated with the Scuola dei Grigi began working together at Carcare in 1863.

Genoa Carcare and the Bormida Valley

Genoa provided the artistic setting for the group, while Carcare and the Bormida Valley became important places for painting outdoors. The memory of these gatherings is associated with Villa Maura in Carcare. During the winter, the artists also met in Genoa, at the Palazzetto Doria.

The changing light along the riverbanks, the Ligurian coast, and the inland countryside offered subjects that could be studied directly. These places gave the painters opportunities to compare their work and develop individual responses to the same landscape.

Why the painters were called the Grigi

The name refers to their interest in tonal relationships, especially delicate half-tones and silvery grays. Their paintings often bring muted greens, earth colors, and pale light into a closely balanced whole. This sensitivity to atmosphere gives the Scuola dei Grigi its distinctive place in Italian landscape painting.

Ton Gris and the study of light

Diego Martelli recalled Saverio Altamura’s role in introducing the Florentine artistic circle to the ton gris of French painting. He also described the use of a black mirror to mute the variety of colors in nature and make relationships between light and shade easier to grasp.

These experiments offer a useful comparison with the tonal interests of the Ligurian painters, whose work gives particular attention to half-tones and the balance of light across a scene.

“It was he […] who began to speak of the ton gris, then fashionable in Paris, and everyone […] followed the path he had indicated, using a black mirror that, by muting nature’s varied colors, makes it easier to grasp the overall chiaroscuro, the macchia.” Diego Martelli, recalling Saverio Altamura.

The style of the Scuola dei Grigi

Painting from life lies at the heart of their work. Outdoors, the artists observed how light changed across fields, woods, and waterways. Their palettes often favor soft transitions and restrained contrasts, allowing individual forms to take their place within the surrounding atmosphere.

The result can feel intimate even when the view is expansive. A riverbank or a quiet stretch of coast becomes a study of the light particular to that place. This attention to observation connects the group with broader developments in Italian plein air painting.

The main artists

Tammar Luxoro, Ernesto Rayper, Alfredo d’Andrade, Serafín de Avendaño, and Alberto Issel are among the principal figures associated with the Scuola dei Grigi. The wider Genoese and Ligurian setting also included artists such as Santo Bertelli, Domenico Casella, Benedetto Musso, and Francesco Semino.

Tammar Luxoro

Tammar Luxoro (Genoa, 1825–1899) helped shape a new approach to landscape through both his paintings and his teaching. He encouraged younger artists to study nature directly and brought them into contact with the ideas of Antonio Fontanesi. His work and example helped connect Ligurian painting with developments elsewhere in Italy.

A Tammar Luxoro painting at our gallery

Our gallery offers Landscape with Figures, a signed oil on canvas by Tammar Luxoro.
