{"id":116434,"date":"2023-08-02T19:53:31","date_gmt":"2023-08-02T18:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/?p=116434"},"modified":"2025-10-30T14:33:39","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:33:39","slug":"gastone-biggi-and-gruppo-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/gastone-biggi-and-gruppo-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Gastone Biggi and Gruppo 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><b>Gastone Biggi and Gruppo 1<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Several art movements were formed in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s including <em>Arte Programmat<\/em>a in Milan, <em>Gruppo N<\/em> in Padua, which included Alberto Biasi, Gastone Biggi and <em>Gruppo 1<\/em> in Rome, the <em>Zero Group<\/em> in D\u00fcsseldorf, <em>Recherches<\/em> <em>d&#8217;Art Visuel<\/em> in Paris, and <em>Equipo 57<\/em> in Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gruppo 1\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b><i>Gruppo 1 <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was founded in Rome in 1962 and broke up in 1967. The members were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastone Biggi, Nicola Carrino, the group&#8217;s theorist, Nato Frasc\u00e0, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achille Pace, Pasquale &#8220;Nini&#8221; Santoro, and Giuseppe Uncini.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santoro left the group in 1963, Pace in 1964, and Biggi in 1965. Carrino, Frasc\u00e0, and Uncini stayed until 1967. Gruppo Uno was one of the last art movements to form in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art critic Giulio Carlo Argan was a art.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another group was developing In Rome, <\/span><b>the <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/piazza-del-popolo-school\/\">Piazza del Popolo School<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which we have discussed extensively\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They shared the goal of escaping the \u2018shallow waters\u2019 in which <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/informal-art\/\">Informal Art<\/a> had gotten bogged down <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and looking for viable alternatives and new ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>The Purpose of Gruppo 1\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These six painters grouped themselves around a <\/span><\/i><b><i>line of research<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than an artistic program; they wanted to examine situations, <\/span><\/i><b><i>test<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> certain values, and <\/span><\/i><b><i>experiment<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with different solutions.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Giulio Carlo Argan, 1963<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giulio Carlo Argan was one of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gruppo 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0most fervent supporters, defending them in bitter battles that attracted the attention of critics abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had their first group shows at the Quadrante in Florence and Galleria Rotta in Genoa in 1963.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They presented their ideas that same year at Galleria la Medusa in Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
