{"id":115770,"date":"2023-06-13T17:07:28","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T16:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/?p=115770"},"modified":"2025-10-30T14:31:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:31:25","slug":"carlo-daloisio-da-vasto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/carlo-daloisio-da-vasto\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto<\/h1>\n<h2><b>Paesaggi Culturali Abruzzesi at Palazzo d\u2019Avalos<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From May 13 to July 30, 2023, the magnificent Palazzo d &#8216;Avalos di Vasto will host the <\/span><b><i>Paesaggi Culturali<\/i><\/b><b> Abruzzesi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cultural Landscapes of Abruzzo) project with a first retrospective show of the artist Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto from Vasto. Eighty works by the artist will be shown focused on Abruzzo, including some give on loan from the Museums of Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project honors an artist (or truly an artist couple) of uncommon sensitivity and mastery: Carlo d\u2019Aloisio da Vasto (Vasto 1892 \u2013 Roma 1971) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a painter, artist, and especially a promoter of arts<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master of Art and Culture<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d as the heading of the website about him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason we referred to an artist couple is that Carlo d &#8216;Aloisio was married to the sculptor Elisabetta Mayo (Naples 1894\u2013Rome 1972) and they had a partnership in life and art as professional as it was wonderful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Adam&#8217;s Mask by Elisabetta Mayo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Egidi MadeinItaly, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we are delighted and proud that one of our sculptures was chosen by the exhibition&#8217;s curator <strong>Prof.ssa Paola Di Felice<\/strong>. We thank her sincerely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bronze work of uncommon intensity is by <strong>Elisabetta Mayo<\/strong>, \u201cThe Mask of Adam\u201d and will be exhibited in the retrospective at Palazzo d&#8217;Avalos in Vasto. The exhibition&#8217;s vernissage is scheduled for May 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/La-maschera-di-Adamo-Elisabetta-Mayo-scaled-e1686677729940.jpg\" alt=\"Elisabetta Mayo bronze sculpture for saleon Egidi MadeinItaly\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Mask of Adam by Elisabetta Mayo,<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Who was Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give a quick overview of his biography, we could say that though he was self-taught, <\/span><b>Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> da Vasto<\/strong> managed to reach the highest expressions of the Roman artistic <strong>movement known as Tonalism<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He remained very attached to his roots to the point that: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>He loves this popular culture and feels a part of it. He perceives its age-old, archaic value that forms the structure of humanity<\/em>.\u201d Paolo Calvano<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was surrounded only by classical artists, the true giants of the Academy such as the Palizzi brothers, <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/gabriele-smargiassi\/\">Gabriele Smargiassi<\/a>, and Valerico Laccetti.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, he was drawn to the painting of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/roman-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Avant-Garde of the Roman School<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the point that we can consider him \u201cin certain aspects of meaning and form, a forerunner of the tonal Chiarismo of the great period of the Roman 1930s (D. Micacchi 1981).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Tramonto-anni-60-Carlo-dAloisio-da-Vasto-scaled-e1686677706949.jpg\" alt=\"Paesaggi Culturali Abruzzesi on Egidi MadeinItaly\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Painting by Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Elisabetta Mayo: wife and artist<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1927, <strong>Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto<\/strong> married <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/elisabetta-mayo-daloisio\/\"><strong>Elisabetta Mayo<\/strong><\/a> (Naples 1894 \u2013 Rome 1972), a sculptor and <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/vincenzo-gemito-at-the-petit-palais\/\">Vincenzo Gemito<\/a>&#8216;s favorite student. They used to work together in their Roman atelier at Viale Giulio Cesare 51.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collaboration would prove very fruitful as we can read on the website about them:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<em>In March, 1929, he and his wife Elisabetta Mayo organized a major solo exhibition in Rome in the Stanze del Libro in the Salone delle Tre Venezie, which was opened by Giuseppe Bottai and graced with the presence of King Victor Emmanuel III<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the coming years, they took part together and individually in prestigious Italian and international exhibitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll end with one of this truly special couple&#8217;s many artistic expressions, their poetry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their sensibility led them to write poems too of such quality that a recent event in Vasto spotlighted this aspect of their artistic abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll leave you with the words of these artists&#8217; grandson whom I had the pleasure of meeting, <\/span><b>Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio Mayo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> president of the \u201cArchive of Master Carlo d&#8217;Aloisio da Vasto\u201d Cultural Association, with his beautiful words spoken at this event:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dialogue between Carlo and Elisa<\/span><b> is only one piece of the mosaic with which we are gradually reconstructing and honoring the artistic and cultural lives of two artists from Vasto, helped by the generous, dedicated support of many people.\u00a0<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too many decades have passed, letting a sort of oblivion fall on the artistic expressions and cultural pursuits of Carlo d\u2019Aloisio da Vasto and Elisabetta Mayo.
