The term Pop Art is short for \u201cPopular Art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The term \u201cpopular\u201d here means \u201cmass\u201d because it appropriates the means of mass communication and new technologies to create artworks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To think that these days \u201c<\/span>popular<\/span><\/i>\u201d art is bought for such astronomical sums!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The history of Italian Pop Art<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Pop Art in Italy came\u00a0 with the Venice <\/span>Biennale of ’64, where the works of American pop artists were presented.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The movement took root most firmly in Rome and spread from there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the artists of the School of Piazza del Popolo were: Mario Schifano<\/a>, Tano Festa, Franco Angeli<\/a>, Mimmo Rotella<\/a>, Giosetta Fioroni, Mario Ceroli, Cesare Tacchi, and Renato Mambor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mimmo Rotella’s artistic path (Catanzaro 1918-Milan 2006) began as a figurative painter before he became an abstract-geometric painter.<\/span><\/p>\n

His first solo show was in 1951 at the Chiurazzi Gallery in Rome. He exhibited in Paris in the same year at the <\/span>Salon des R\u00e9alit\u00e9s Nouvelles.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

A Fulbright Foundation grant took him to Kansas City in Missouri between 1951 and 1952, first as a student and then as an artist in residence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here he met Rauschenberg, Oldenburg, Cy Twombly, Pollock, and Klein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He returned to Rome and worked in a studio near Piazza del Popolo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His signature technique was d\u00e9collage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Italian Pop Art and American Pop Art: Commonalities and Differences\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Italian Pop Art<\/strong> draws inspiration from its centuries-old classical tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, consider how Tano Festa<\/a> reinterpreted Michelangelo’s Adam in the Sistine Chapel<\/a> in Pop Art style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Franco Angeli’s she-wolf.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mario Ceroli<\/strong>‘s avenging angel, drawn from the Apocalypse.<\/span> He specifically references the sculpture that looms over Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome<\/span><\/p>\n

American Pop Art, in constrast, is steeped in American culture of advertising and comics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Italian Pop Art<\/strong>, and Pop shared images of Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Jackie Kennedy to name a few icons, through the works of Andy Warhol, Martial Raysse, Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, Mimmo Rotella, Allen Jones, and Gerhard Richter.<\/span><\/p>\n

When and where Pop Art began\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1962 was the year of Pop Art’s triumph in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was the opening of a group show at the Sidney Janis Gallery on 57th Street.<\/span><\/p>\n

Twenty-nine artists took part, including Jim Dine, Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, George Segal, and Andy Warhol, dubbed the <\/span>\u201cnew realists<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A few weeks later, on December 13, 1962, the event’s importance was emphasized when MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art organized a round table on the controversial phenomenon called Pop Art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All the best artists that were part of the round table had a solo show that same year in a New York gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n

An impressive number of art works were made in those 12 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of them are now in museums and considered Pop Art classics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Background of the Pop Art phenomenon<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By the mid-1950s, the solitary, furious <\/span>action painting<\/span><\/i> of Jackson Pollock<\/strong>, Yves Kline<\/strong> and the other abstract expressionist artists who had thrown their inner worlds onto the canvas with their intellectual and existential tensions,\u00a0 <\/span>had <\/span>started to run dry<\/b> and generate lackluster imitators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rauschenberg<\/strong> made the dramatic and highly emblematic gesture of buying a drawing by De Kooning, erasing it and then exhibiting it with the title <\/span>Erased De Kooning Drawing<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1958 Robert Rauschenberg<\/em> and Jasper Johns<\/em> exhibited at Leo Castelli<\/strong> for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their art suggested a new expression to the generation that came after them, a new artistic and ideological form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rauschenberg included everyday objects such as radios, bottles, clocks<\/strong>, and fans in an abstract expressionist context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Johns used painted layers to intervene on a clear image of flag or target, transforming objects into paintings.<\/span><\/p>\n

The importance of Pop Art<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As I see it, Pop Art turned the concept of art on its head.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andy Warhol reproduced silkscreen images taken from newspapers, consumer goods, and posters. His mechanical, cold \u2018art\u2019 created the effect of <\/span>documentary realism<\/span><\/i>, subverting the traditional concept of art as a human artifact.<\/span><\/p>\n
