{"id":110645,"date":"2022-07-02T19:27:48","date_gmt":"2022-07-02T18:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/?p=110645"},"modified":"2025-10-30T14:19:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:19:08","slug":"roman-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/roman-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Roman School"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Roman School<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The common <span style=\"color: #333333;\">definition of<\/span> the <strong>Roman School<\/strong> was invented in 1930 by the French art critic Waldemar George (\u00c9cole de Rome).<\/p>\n<p>One of the most interesting, vital eras in 20th-century Italian art was figurative work in Rome between the World Wars.<\/p>\n<p>It was more an association of artists rather than an actual school. It was a spontaneous coming together of artists who shared ideals, places and atmospheres.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100180\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100180 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/1251DBF6-99EC-4055-8D00-C19FD3AC6579-e1680004163782-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Castellucci Katy Modern Art Paintings Roman School Movement\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katy Castellucci Roman School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The Roman School art movement<\/h2>\n<p>Even within the variety of their expressive languages, the shared definition is justified by certain decisive elements of continuity.<\/p>\n<p>Among these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0deep connection to Rome, the Eternal City,<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0devotion to the &#8220;craft&#8221; and experimentation<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0profound intolerance for art as the expression of a regime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Possibly partly as a reaction against rampant rhetoric, the works of these artists portray intimate worlds, sometimes subdued, full of uneasy gazes.<\/p>\n<p>They tell of a hidden, unknown city, steeped in ancient myths and baroque implications.<\/p>\n<p>This is a melancholic Rome even in its incessant transformation towards modernity; it&#8217;s a city at dusk about to disappear under the blows of the &#8220;cleaning axe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The places<\/h2>\n<p>The artistic and cultural community gathered around the art galleries, the Art Gallery of Rome or <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/galleria-della-cometa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>La Cometa<\/strong><\/a>, in the cafes, <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/caffe-aragno-and-the-roman-school\/\">the Aragno<\/a> or the <strong>Caff\u00e8 Greco<\/strong> and studios the likes of Villa Strohl Fern.<\/p>\n<p>These <strong>places<\/strong> are all found in an area between the historic center and the Monti, Pinciano and Villa Borghese neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>The critic and poet Libero De Libero wrote, recalling those years:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;That was our great season of friendship.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Poetry came before any need. There was not a single obstacle between us and the matters of art, between us and things.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are many artists connected to this School and different movements of which they are part.<\/p>\n<h2>Different movements of the Roman School<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Magical Realism painters<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>They include representatives of <strong>Magical Realism<\/strong> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/product\/modern-art\/modern-work-on-paper-en\/antonio-donghi-watercolour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Antonio Donghi<\/strong><\/a> (Rome 1897 &#8211; 1963), <strong>Francesco Trombadori<\/strong> (Syracuse 1886 &#8211; Rome 1961), <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/riccardo-francalancia\/\">Riccardo Francalancia<\/a> (Assisi 1886 &#8211; Rome 1965) and <strong>Ferruccio Ferrazzi<\/strong> (Rome 1891 &#8211; 1978).<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-110645 gallery-columns-3 timelessness.<\/p>\n<h3>The School of Via Cavour<\/h3>\n<p>Other members of the <strong>Roman School<\/strong> are the founders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/via-cavour-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Via Cavour<\/a>, as coined by the art critic <strong>Roberto Longhi<\/strong> (Alba 1890 and included <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/mario-mafai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mario Mafai<\/a> (Rome 1902-1965) and <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/antonietta-raphael\/\">Antonietta Rapha\u00ebl<\/a> (Kaunas 1895 &#8211; Rome 1975), who joined <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/scipione\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scipione<\/a><strong> Bonichi<\/strong> (Macerata 1904 &#8211; Arco 1933) to constitute a first true revival group.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tonal painters<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For the 1930s there are &#8220;tonal&#8221; painters including <strong>Corrado Cagli<\/strong> (Ancona 1910 &#8211; Rome 1976), <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/fiamma-vigos-galleria-numero\/giuseppe-capogrossi-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giuseppe Capogrossi<\/a> (Rome 1900 &#8211; 1972), <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/emanuele-cavalli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emanuele Cavalli<\/a> (Lucera 1904 &#8211; Florence 1981), <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/roberto-melli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roberto Melli <\/a>(Ferrara 1885 &#8211; Rome 1958) and <strong>Guglielmo Janni<\/strong> (Rome 1892 &#8211; 1958).<\/p>\n<p>Their focus is light-color-space relationships, and after World War II, they developed a new &#8220;realistic&#8221; language impelled to depict the rawest reality.<\/p>\n<p>These include artists like Alberto Ziveri (Rome 1908 &#8211; 1990), Fausto Pirandello (Rome 1899 &#8211; 1975), Renato Guttuso (Bagheria 1911 &#8211; Rome 1987) and the young <strong>Pericle Fazzini<\/strong> (Grottammare 1913 &#8211; Rome 1987), Mirko Basaldella (Udine 1910 &#8211; Cambridge 1969), <strong>Leoncillo Leonardi<\/strong> (Spoleto 1915 &#8211; Rome 1968), Renato Marino Mazzacurati (S.
