{"id":108051,"date":"2022-01-24T11:28:49","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T10:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/figurine-masters-father-benedetto-papale\/"},"modified":"2022-01-31T13:01:09","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T13:01:09","slug":"figurine-masters-father-benedetto-papale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/figurine-masters-father-benedetto-papale\/","title":{"rendered":"Figurine Masters:  Father Benedetto Papale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the last great figurine masters was <strong>Father Benedetto Papale<\/strong>, friar of the order of the Minims. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was known for designing the night lighting of the monumental staircase of Santa Maria del Monte in Caltagirone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He created the method that used paper &#8220;roof tiles&#8221; in three colors, white, red and green, opaque or transparent, lit within by terracotta oil lamps and arranged in an original pattern that creates extraordinary lighting effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of his most important works were the permanent monumental nativity scene made for the church of Santa Maria di Betlem in Modica, built together with the <strong>Bongiovanni Vaccaro workshop<\/strong>: Giuseppe, his sons Salvatore and Giacomo and his student Giacomo Azzolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its over sixty terracotta figurines are set in a landscape that evokes the local countryside. It was presented to the public in 1881, the same year that Giuseppe Verga&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malavoglia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was published.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exceptional quality of these terracotta figurines is that they anticipated the modes of realist representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These sculptures portray their humble peasants, shepherds and commoners with true, vivid realism. These characters are the same type found in Verga&#8217;s work. They became collector pieces among the wealthy classes, status symbols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This figurative realism preceded the literary one to the extent that it was even mentioned by Verga in the pages of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mastro don Gesualdo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1889), where he talks about Bongiovanni Vaccaro&#8217;s nativity scenes as &#8220;must-haves&#8221; for the nobles of the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the last great figurine masters was Father Benedetto Papale, friar of the order of the Minims.
