Gian Carozzi was born in La Spezia in 1920 and died in Sarzana in 2008. He emerged in the post-war Ligurian art scene and soon became involved in some of the most innovative debates of Italian painting.<\/p>\n

After his early years in La Spezia, Carozzi moved to Milan between 1949 and 1950. There he entered the circle of the Galleria del Naviglio, directed by Carlo Cardazzo, and came into contact with Lucio Fontana. This experience marked a decisive phase in his career.<\/p>\n

Gian Carozzi and the Gruppo dei Sette<\/h2>\n

Before moving to Milan, Carozzi had taken part in the artistic life of La Spezia and was associated with the Gruppo dei Sette<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The group reflected the desire of a younger generation of Ligurian artists to move beyond traditional painting and engage with the new languages emerging after the Second World War.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Carozzi participated in the Premio del Golfo<\/strong>, one of the most significant post-war exhibitions in Liguria. In 1950 his works Geodinamica di Lerici<\/em> and Geodinamica di Porto Venere<\/em> were singled out by the jury. That same year he also exhibited at the 25th Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n

Milan and Spatialism<\/h2>\n

Milan brought Carozzi into direct contact with the most advanced artistic research of the period.<\/p>\n

At the Galleria del Naviglio he met Lucio Fontana and artists connected with Spatialism. In 1951 Carozzi signed the Third Manifesto of Spatial Art<\/strong>. The following year he also signed the Manifesto of the Spatial Movement for Television<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

His involvement with the Spatialist group<\/a> was intense but relatively brief. Between 1951 and 1952 he took part in exhibitions and discussions alongside Fontana, Roberto Crippa, Gianni Dova, Mario Deluigi and other artists linked to the movement.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Carozzi never reduced his work to a single movement or formula. Even during his Spatialist phase, his painting remained open to Surrealist suggestions, gestural experimentation and a renewed interest in the figure.<\/p>\n

Beyond Spatialism<\/h2>\n

After the early 1950s, Carozzi gradually distanced himself from the collective experience of Spatialism.<\/p>\n

His research became increasingly personal. Forms, signs and pictorial matter were explored without adherence to a fixed aesthetic programme.<\/p>\n

This independence became one of the most distinctive aspects of his work. At different moments, his painting moved between abstraction and figuration, while preserving a strong continuity of thought.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Carozzi repeatedly questioned the limits of painting itself. Rather than following a linear evolution, he returned to earlier themes and visual structures, reworking them through new formal solutions.<\/p>\n

The years in Paris<\/h2>\n

At the end of the 1950s, Carozzi left Milan and moved to Paris.<\/p>\n

He remained there for around twenty years. The French capital offered him a different cultural environment and reinforced his independence from the Italian artistic groups with which he had previously been associated.<\/p>\n

During this long Parisian period, his work continued to evolve outside a single stylistic definition. Painting remained the central field of investigation, while figuration and abstraction alternated without becoming mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n

Return to Liguria<\/h2>\n

At the end of the 1970s, Carozzi returned to Liguria.<\/p>\n

In the early 1980s he settled in Sarzana, where he lived and worked until his death in 2008. This return did not represent a retreat from contemporary artistic debate. On the contrary, his later work continued to revisit many of the questions that had shaped his career since the post-war years.<\/p>\n

In his final decades, Carozzi recovered signs, gestures and forms that recalled his earlier experiences. However, these elements were transformed through a more solitary and introspective approach.<\/p>\n

His entire career can therefore be read as a continuous investigation into painting, rather than as a succession of separate phases. This coherence makes him an important figure in the history of post-war Italian art.<\/p>\n

Among the works currently available is Still Life with Cuttlefish<\/em><\/a>, 1942, a painting from the artist\u2019s early figurative period. The work predates his involvement with Spatialism and offers an important insight into the development of his pictorial language.<\/p>\n
