Onorato Carlandi<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Onorato Carlandi (Rome, 15 May 1848 \u2013 Rome, 11 April 1939) was an Italian painter and watercolourist, known above all for his landscapes of the Roman countryside and for his role in In Arte Libertas<\/em> and the XXV della Campagna Romana<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti under Coghetti, Capalti, and De Santis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After news of the war broke in 1866 he enlisted with Garibaldi\u2019s volunteers in the Trentino campaign. Driven by memories and enthusiasm for the war years, he painted La barca dei Cairoli<\/em> (The Cairoli Brothers’ Boat, 1871) at Domenico Morelli’s school in Naples and I prigionieri di Mentana<\/em> (The Prisoners of Mentana, 1872) in Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n

His historical paintings met with unexpected success when presented at the Casina del Pincio in Rome in 1871.<\/span><\/p>\n

Onorato Carlandi moved to London<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 1880 Carlandi moved to London, where he studied the landscapes of John Constable and J. M. W. Turner and the watercolours of Peter De Wint and David Cox. The experience profoundly influenced his approach to landscape painting and strengthened his commitment to working directly from nature.<\/p>\n

During his stay in England, he painted the countryside and numerous views of the Thames. Years later, in 1909, he recalled his English experience in an article published in The Studio<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Only after my stay in London, home of the modern landscape, did my eyes open to the light. Once there I went from Turner to Constable and on to David Cox. But one stayed on my mind above all: Peter de Wint.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Campagna Romana Group<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 1886, Onorato Carlandi was among the founders of the association In Arte Libertas<\/em>, together with Nino Costa, Vincenzo Cabianca and other artists. The group promoted a direct study of nature, combining a naturalistic approach with increasingly symbolic overtones.<\/p>\n

In Arte Libertas attracted numerous artists and developed an important exhibition programme, from the London exhibition of 1888 to its collective presentation at the Venice Biennale in 1899.<\/p>\n

After Nino Costa\u2019s death, the association came to an end. However, some of its leading members, including Enrico Coleman and Onorato Carlandi, continued to pursue the direct study of nature and contributed to the foundation of the XXV della Campagna Romana<\/em> in 1904.<\/p>\n

Exhibitions<\/span><\/h2>\n

Carlandi exhibited at the Royal Academy in London between 1882 and 1889 and also took part in exhibitions in Paris, Berlin and D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n

After returning to Rome, he continued to exhibit his watercolours regularly and with considerable success. In 1910, at the IX Venice Biennale, he presented more than fifty watercolours depicting impressions of the English and Roman countryside.<\/p>\n

On the first anniversary of Carlandi\u2019s death, a major retrospective was held at the Museo di Roma. On that occasion, his widow donated 150 works by the artist to the museum.<\/p>\n
