Francesco Galante was born in Margherita di Savoia on 4 November 1884 and moved to Naples at a young age. From 1896 he studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, where his teachers included Michele Cammarano and Vincenzo Volpe. He completed his studies in 1904, receiving first prize in both figure painting and landscape.<\/p>\n
Galante began working as an illustrator while he was still a student. In 1904, together with Alberto Martini, he was among the first contributors to the Milanese magazine Varietas<\/em>. In 1911 he illustrated articles by Ferdinando Russo for La Lettura<\/em>.<\/p>\n His graphic work continued alongside his painting. He collaborated with several Neapolitan periodicals and also produced illustrations for Benedetto Croce\u2019s Un angolo di Napoli<\/em>, published in 1912.<\/p>\n From the early 1910s, Galante developed a pictorial language open to contemporary European influences. His early works often feature a lively, fragmented brushstroke, with Post-Impressionist overtones and a refined sensitivity to light.<\/p>\n Works from this period include Giuliana<\/em>, shown in 1909 at the First National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rimini, Ascoltando<\/em>, also from 1909, and I bagnanti<\/em> of 1911.<\/p>\n Over time, this approach was combined with a more intimate sensibility. Galante increasingly focused on female figures, interiors, domestic scenes and landscapes in which narrative and atmosphere are closely intertwined.<\/p>\n Paintings such as Le amiche<\/em> and Ischia, ultimo sole<\/em> illustrate this development. In the latter, the high horizon and compressed perspective give the composition a markedly decorative character.<\/p>\n After the First World War, during which he served at the front, Galante resumed his exhibition activity.<\/p>\n In 1921 he took part in the First National Art Biennale in Naples with works including Ingenua<\/em>, Graziella<\/em> and Gli sposi<\/em>. The following year he exhibited a substantial group of paintings at the National Spring Art Exhibition in Florence.<\/p>\n During his career, he also participated in major national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, the Salon d\u2019Automne in Paris and the Roman Secession.<\/p>\n During the 1930s, his work moved closer to the cultural climate of the Novecento Italiano. Nevertheless, Galante retained his interest in intimate atmospheres and subtle effects of light. Giovinetta<\/em>, dating from around 1934 and now in the artistic collections of the Quirinale, is a significant example.<\/p>\n Galante\u2019s reputation was also reflected in the institutional positions he held.<\/p>\n He was a member of the National Commission for the Protection of Monuments, Landscape and Architectural Aesthetics. Between 1930 and 1932 he taught printmaking techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples.
