{"id":114362,"date":"2022-08-12T17:30:05","date_gmt":"2022-08-12T16:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/artisti\/tullio-crali\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T09:34:55","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T08:34:55","slug":"tullio-crali","status":"publish","type":"artisti","link":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artisti\/tullio-crali\/","title":{"rendered":"Tullio Crali"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>The Early Years<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tullio Crali<\/strong> (Igalo, 1910 \u2013 Milan, 2000) was one of few <strong>Futurist aero-painters<\/strong> who conveyed the cultural and political implications of Futurism&#8217;s second wave into the late 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Incuneandosi-nellabitato-1939-scaled-e1660323390662-300x252.jpeg\" alt=\"Tullio Crali Incuneandosi nell'abitato, 1939\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until age 12, he lived with his family in Zadar, which was an Italian city at the time, but he later remembered little of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing he did remember was having been struck in 1919 by an abandoned seaplane in the water in front of his home, which may have sparked his passion for flight and his future as an aero-painter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1922 his family moved to Gorizia, a city that was still marked by war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is how Crali described his adolescence in Gorizia:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>When I came from Zadar to Gorizia, the city was still wounded \u2013 the barbed wire fences of war, the shell casings like confetti in the grass. I grew up among war cemeteries, bones, and memorabilia. But I was always looking toward the sky where airplanes circled to keep from rusting in their hangars. I couldn&#8217;t become an aviator, so I became a Futurist aero-painter<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Merna Airfield near Gorizia, unused in World War I, was one of several fields modernized and restored by the Italian Air Force, founded in 1923.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1931 the airport was fully operational. During this time, young Tullio Crali got to watch countless practice flights from the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111143\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111143 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Spazio-Cosmico-scaled-e1680015937919-300x212.jpeg\" alt=\"Tullio Crauli Spazio Cosmico Aeropittura\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Spazio-Cosmico-scaled-e1680015937919-300x212.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Spazio-Cosmico-scaled-e1680015937919-768x544.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Spazio-Cosmico-scaled-e1680015937919-600x425.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Spazio-Cosmico-scaled-e1680015937919.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spazio Cosmico<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Aero-Painting and Futurism<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of <strong>Tullio Crali<\/strong>&#8216;s first documented works was a small tempera painting called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airplanes over the Metropolis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made in 1926 at just 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was drawn early to the beloved Futurist theme of the modern city, and the vertical thrust of skyscrapers interrupted by layers of fog crossing the sky recalls Antonio Sant&#8217;Elia&#8217;s utopian architecture. His work also reveals a surprisingly refined sensitivity to color for such a young painter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crali started painting in 1925 after reading about Futurism in the Neapolitan newspaper supplement <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mattino Illustrato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His works were inspired by the compositions of <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/giacomo-balla-and-the-futurism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Giacomo Balla<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Umberto Boccioni<\/strong>, and other avant-garde Italian artists whose works he saw printed in newspapers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The young Crali could not study Futurist works in person, so he learned about them from periodicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He found ideas and models in the articles of the magazine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, edited by <strong>Enrico Prampolini<\/strong> until 1925, which led to interesting works like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airplane Rumble<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1927.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This small watercolor was clearly inspired by real aircraft that he saw taking off from Merna Airfield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His works even anticipated the Manifesto of Aero-Painting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wrote about his first experience flying on a small seaplane in Istria in 1928:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt satisfied my eagerness to see, to hear, to know: the surge of take-off, the engines\u2019 powerful roar, the propeller&#8217;s intransigence, the surprise of being suspended a hundred, five hundred, a thousand meters above the sea.
