{"id":111353,"date":"2022-09-15T17:20:14","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T16:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/?post_type=artisti&#038;p=111353"},"modified":"2025-03-02T08:57:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-02T07:57:42","slug":"scipione","status":"publish","type":"artisti","link":"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artisti\/scipione\/","title":{"rendered":"Scipione"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gino Bonichi<\/strong> was a complex, interesting character nicknamed <strong>Scipione<\/strong> because of his great height.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/La-ciociara-1930-scaled-e1668517010564.jpeg\" alt=\"Scipione La ciociara \" width=\"260\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Woman from Ciociaria 1930ca<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He met<a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/artists\/mario-mafai\/\"><strong> Mario Mafai<\/strong><\/a> in 1924 and died in 1933 from tuberculosis contracted as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his short life, he left an indelible mark on the Roman art world.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in Macerata in 1904. and moved to Rome with his family in 1910.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/ecomsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ritratto-di-Sara-scaled-e1680016127444.jpeg\" alt=\"Sara portrait by Scipione\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of Sara 1927 ca<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Via Cavour group<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most interesting phase of his career began when he joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/the-via-cavour-school\/\">Via Cavour group<\/a> with <strong>Mario Mafai<\/strong> and <strong>Antonietta Raphael<\/strong>, whose knowledge of international art strongly influenced his work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scipione<\/strong>&#8216;s literary interests also inspired his art.<\/p>\n<p>He once painted an expressionist portrait of his friend Giuseppe Ungaretti.<\/p>\n<p>Reds and browns dominate his paintings.<\/p>\n<h2>Rome theme<\/h2>\n<p>Rome is a recurring theme, a <strong>decadent<\/strong>, Baroque Rome inhabited by characters symbolizing a corrupt, lustful society.<\/p>\n<p>Someone once wrote that Scipione&#8217;s paintings were red-hot and belonged to a mysticism that bled gold from the soul and lead from paper. He was inspired by the Roman Baroque and painters like <a href=\"https:\/\/egidimadeinitaly.com\/en\/el-greco\/\">El Greco<\/a> and Masaccio.<\/p>\n<p>Contemporaries included Chagall and the Russian-born, naturalized French citizen Chaim Soutine, both of whom he met through Raphael, of course.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He tried to seize upon all the expressive possibilities of the human figure, which he portrayed freely in both form and color.
