Description

Hanging lamp ceiling lamp in Venetian glass

The original name of this traditional type of hanging lamp from Venice is cesendello.

This was a traditional hanging lamp in the shape of an elongated cylinder which held oil that burned slowly with a wick to light the space. When there was still no street lighting in Venice, it was very dangerous to walk around its calli at night. So, these oil lamps, cesendelli, were placed in parts of the city.

But as this lighting did not suffice, a new profession arose, that of the codega. These people had lamps and accompanied customers for a fee.
