Description

In Japan there is a strong  mask tradition, which dates back to the distant past.
What  can be define as a dramatic art owes its codification to Kan’ami and his son Zeami who around 1300 revisited both the ancient religious ceremonies that took place in the temples and the ancient traditions of dancing.

Everything changes in the Japanese theatrical performances with the actors wearing these masks that represented the most varied states of mind:  happiness,  anger,  sadness,  the absolute lack of emotions. Not only that, masks often symbolize absolute archetypes such as birth, death or divinities. The most complete form can be found in the theatre called Noh, where the epic poems of Ramayana and Mahabharata, a source of inspiration for countless performances, are also represented.
The ultimate aim of these masked characters is to symbolize harmony in the combination of comic and tragic, of good and evil, the only way to purification.
