Studying a bit about the mortar’s origin, I learned that this tool is mentioned in two books of the Bible, Numbers and Proverbs, and was commonly used to crush, pulverize, break up, and grind grains, powders and shells.
“The people went around gathering it, and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil.” (Nm 11:8)
“Though you grind a fool in a mortar, grinding them like grain with a pestle, you will not remove their folly from them.” Proverbs 27:22
