Pair of Baroque Monumental Putti
Papier-mâché angels Florence 17th Century
Pair of large angels mecca silver papier-mâché Florence, late Baroque period.
Description
Original bases in faux marble lacquered wood Their twisting poses, the carvings, and horror vacui decorations are pure baroque but their iconography is extremely rare: a putto holding the "Veil of Veronica" was anything but common in this era. One of the few examples partially comparable to our sculptures is the bas-relief in the church of Santissimo Salvatore in Palermo, Sicily. This all suggests that these two angels might be unique models from the atelier of a great master sculptor.
