Description

The sculpture represents a cheerful child with a rebel tuft, wearing a big hat and a handkerchief, knotted around his neck in the typical fashion of the farmers of Abruzzo. You can read the signature to the right shoulder. A veritable social craze, the production of bronze statuettes enjoyed renewed popularity under the July Monarchy in France and in Italy. Small bronze pieces, perfectly suited to the decoration of bourgeois interiors, became easier to produce thanks to the invention of mechanical reduction techniques, adapted to sand casting, which was quicker and less costly than the traditional lust-wax process. Such innovations resulted in the success of foundries like the Maison Susse and French sculptors like Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875), James Pradier (1790-1852), Pierre-François Feuchère (1737- 1823) and Italians like Vincenzo Gemito (Napoli 1852 – 1929) and Francesco Paolo Michetti, (Tocco di Casauria 1851 – Francavilla 1929).
